US state sees record revenue for month of December

The US state of Maryland has seen record revenue fall into its coffers over the month of December. According to various reports, several casinos across the state helped to pull in the largest tally yet for Maryland from gambling, with an estimated $133.5 million taken onboard over the final month of 2016.

The MGM National Harbor

The launch of the MGM National Harbor Casino has taken credit for the sudden surge in revenue. The recently opened casinos cost $1.4 billion to construct, but in its first month of operation managed to rake in $41.9 million on its own. That puts it second behind the long-established and hugely popular Maryland Live Casino, which brought in $48 million in revenue. There was initial panic for the Maryland Live Casino when the MGM National Harbour was announced, over fears that a large chunk of players would jump ship to the prestigious new venue, but at the moment at least, those worries appear to be unfounded.

Other Maryland casinos

A host of other casinos in the state contributed to the overall boost in gambling revenue. The Horseshoe brought in $29.7 million, whilst the Hollywood Casino Perryville netted $6.1 million. Event smaller scale casinos such as the Ocean Downs Casino and the Rocky Gap Casino brought home $4.1 million, and $3.5 million, respectively.

A record month for Maryland casinos

Together the combined chunk of $133.5 million means that a record has been broken. The previous record was set in May 2015, when the casino industry bought in $104.4 million. December haul’s is an increase of 40.2% on the previous December (2015), so things are certainly looking up for the gambling industry in the state.

What about the future of other Maryland casinos?

Of course, numerous worries still exist for the Maryland Live Casino, which until the launch of the MHM National Harbor Casino was the grandest and most popular casino in the US state. Whilst December has shown that the Maryland Live Casino still has the edge, most industry insiders are expecting the MGM National Harbor to gradually outrank and outperform the Live Casino over the first months of 2017. The Maryland Live Casino shouldn’t be overly concerned, though. Early predictions are that the casino will still be able to provide a sufficient rival to the new MGM venue, and that it is likely to the be the Rocky Gap Casino and Ocean Downs Casino which suffer the most. Neither of those venues can compete with the MGM National Harbor in terms of size, and popularity.

The MGM National Harbor was able to lure in huge A-lister celebrity acts for its opening month, and many believe that trend will continue, putting pressure on the smaller casinos. As for Maryland, though, they are set to be rolling in cash from the gambling industry as 2016 becomes 2017.
